Day #1: Fireman's Brigade Smoked Turkey Leg & Baked Potato

It was my first stop of The Challenge at Knott's Berry Farm, and I was feeling extra hungry today because I skipped lunch at work that day. I tried thinking about what could be a great option with lots of protein, so I knew I had to hit up the "Fireman's Brigade BBQ" for some meat. As I arrived I was disappointed to notice they no longer offered the 1/4 chicken and ribs meal that they used to have in previous years. That used to be my family's and my favorite meal to eat when we would visit the park, and although it was still on the menu it was no longer a meal plan option. I also couldn't help but notice how much the prices have gone up in recent years, but I guess I cannot be too shocked with inflation the way it's been.

As I stood in line my mouth was salivating as the smell of the BBQ wafted into the air from the outdoor grill. You could smell the spices and rub on the meats. I looked over and saw turkey legs, chicken, sausages, and corn roasting on the grill, and I got even more excited for the feast that was to come. Once I finally reach the front of the line I placed my order with the teenager for a smoked turkey leg and a baked potato since they ran out of the veggie skewers for that day. Since I also have the all-you-can-drink option added to my pass I requested a cup of Boysenberry Punch. It tastes better than regular punch in my opinion, and I sipped on my beverage as I waited on the side for my food.

It did not take long to get my meal, and I requested butter for my potato and grabbed a container of BBQ sauce. I noticed a lot of people who were waiting in line before me grab foil to wrap up their meal to-go, so I think I am not the only one taking advantage of my meal plan benefits. I don't blame them because my meal would have cost $19.00 if I had paid out of pocket, and another $5.50 for my Boysenberry Punch.

I decided to enjoy my meal at the park so I could walk around and hit my 10,000 steps for the day, so I sat at one of the red and white plaid picnic tables, and I grabbed a packet of salt and pepper so I could dig in. It only took one bite of smoked turkey with BBQ sauce dipped in for me to fall in love with it. The poultry was crispy, yet juicy at the same time. I was shocked because I know in previous years when I had the turkey leg I thought it was too dry. Not this one though. It was charred perfectly, and the tangy BBQ sauce gave it that extra bit of flavor so it wouldn't overpower the smokiness. The baked potato was slightly overcooked, but adding the extra butter, salt, and pepper made it delicious nonetheless. The turkey leg itself was huge, and it reminded me of something Fred Flintstone would eat in his TV show. I was not able to finish the whole thing by myself in one sitting, but I know for next time the meal is perfect to pack with foil and take home so I can keep my leftovers. I walked around so I could hit my 10,000 steps and I got another Boysenberry Punch on my way out of the park.

Overall, I was extremely satisfied and give it a 9/10. I saved $30.00 for the meal and two drinks. This challenge definitely had a strong start, and I am actually feeling excited to come back tomorrow.

Final Thoughts

I took the time to calculate my amusement park meals for all 10 visits, and in total they would have cost me $249 exactly. In total I saved...
